The average American experiences 3,600 bad skin days in a lifetime- with lack of sleep, poor hydration, and even the daily commute being contributing factors- according to new research.

A study examining the skincare routines and worries of 2,000 Americans found that, on average, Americans feel they experience five bad skin days each month.

That means that in a single year, the average American will suffer from 60 terrible skin days.

But what exactly is contributing to Americans’ poor skin? Stress seems to be the number one factor towards suboptimal skin.

The study, which was conducted by OnePoll, in conjunction with CeraVe, unearthed other factors which included lack of sleep, poor hydration, poor diet/consuming certain foods, and sweating too much as reasons why Americans are encountering troublesome skin.

However, the factors leading to poor skin are not just those that Americans can control. Air quality can take a significant toll on skin, especially if skin is not properly cared for. In fact, pollution and air quality was named one of the top three reasons for Americans’ issues with their damaged skin.

Unfortunately, many don’t realize the environment’s impact on their skin. Only one-quarter of Americans identify their polluted environment as a contributor towards their bad skin.

Though this number may be small, 46 percent of Americans admit they feel their commute affects their skin, saying it makes their skin dirtier and prone to breakouts.

Since Americans have a variety of factors that contribute to how unhealthy their skin really is, it’s no wonder that 87 percent of Americans are worried about their skin quality- 48 percent said they worry about it on a regular basis.

But this worry surrounding the health of our skin is more prevalent among women-with half (50 percent) worrying about the health and appearance of their skin, compared to 43 percent of men.

Despite worrying about skin health, that feeling isn’t driving people into action. In fact, nearly one-fifth of Americans say they forget to cleanse their skin at all.

The study examined people’s confidence in their overall appearance and found that, after leaving the house fresh-faced every day, appearances are quickly disheveled. After just two hours and 55 minutes of leaving the house, the average American will feel they’ve lost their ‘morning glow’.

“Cleansing the skin should be a daily priority year-round, but it becomes even more important when people are spending more time outdoors, as the environment can cause dryness, irritations and breakouts,” said Dr. Henry.

Women are notorious for being perpetually concerned about their skin and while 90 percent of women are found worrying about how their skin looks and feels, a staggering 79 percent of men also have these same concerns.

So what are the typical skin concerns that people have when it comes to how their skin looks and feels? Wrinkles emerged as the number one worry for Americans.

However, it doesn’t appear that wrinkles are the only skincare concern among Americans. In fact, other worries that people have when it comes to their skin’s appearance include dryness, sagging, dark spots, and oiliness.

“The skin is our body’s first line of defense, but between toxins encountered during daily commutes to added exposure during the summer months, the skin’s protective barrier goes through more in one day than most realize,” said Derrick Booker, Head of U.S. Marketing.
