Does knowing you can’t be with someone make them more desirable? One in four Americans are currently crushing on somebody who is completely “off-limits”, according to new research.
Additionally, seven in ten of those currently crushing have either acted on those feelings or are planning on acting on them.
A new survey of 2,000 Americans delved into the idea of “taboo” crushes and found that 57 percent of Americans have secretly desired someone they absolutely shouldn’t have some time in their life.
Not only that, one in three Americans have actually acted on those feelings and had a “romantic encounter” with that off-limits person.
The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of EdenFantasys, revealed a lot about how Americans feel about taboo crushes and who, specifically, falls under that “off-limits” umbrella.
The most off-limits person, according to the poll, is a friend’s partner (50 percent), with second place going to anybody in a relationship (46 percent.)
Is it okay to date your friend’s partner if they break up though? According to the results, it’s never okay, as a friend’s ex-partner was the third most off-limits person.
Ex-partner’s sibling (34 percent) and somebody 20+ years your junior or senior (32 percent) also scored high marks.
But just because they’re off-limits doesn’t mean we don’t pursue it anyway. In fact, one in ten Americans said they’ve actually had sex with a roommate, while another one in five said they’ve also done the deed with someone in a relationship.
“Forbidden fruit is the sweetest they say,” said Fred Petrenko of EdenFantasys. “This is the main reason we pursue the off-limits relationships even though they are likely to be disappointing if not damaging experience.”
According to the research, 59 percent of Americans who have gotten busy with someone off-limits say the sex is actually better.
But act on those taboo feelings at your own peril -- 59 percent of those who acted on their feelings for an off-limits person actually regretted it after.
Additionally, half had to deal with repercussions that stemmed from the “romantic event,” with 63 percent saying they had a falling out with the off-limits person after, and another 51 percent saying they lost a friend over the ordeal.
One in three even had to leave their job because of it.
“Taboos are there for a reason,” continued Petrenko. “When you feel an urge to break a taboo, I suggest masturbation. EdenFantasys is where you can find any masturbation device at any price. Stay safe and be happy!”
