One in three Americans wish they could gift somebody “less stress” this holiday season, according to new research.
A new survey of 2,000 Americans found that the holiday spirit transcends the physical realm, as half of those polled said they wished they could give somebody in their life something intangible this year.
Of that half, 70 percent wish they could give somebody good health, while another 43 percent wish they could gift somebody with patience.
The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Slumber Cloud, found that 60 percent wished they could gift somebody in their life with peace of mind.
Another 42 percent wished they could give somebody rest and 47 percent said they wish they could give the gift of time.
While giving somebody an intangible gift would be great, most of us must settle for spending money on something physical.
“You may not be able to give someone the gift of patience or less stress, but you can give a gift that facilitates those," said a spokesperson from Slumber Cloud. "Products such as NASA-engineered temperature regulating bedding can help them get better sleep in turn helping alleviate stress and provides more energy to take on the day.”
The survey went onto find the role money plays in the art of buying gifts, and found that how long you know somebody does factor into how much you invest in a gift.
According to the results, spending more than $50 on a gift for somebody only comes after knowing them for at least four years.
Excluding gifts for their partner, the average American plans to spend $170 this year on gifts for their loved ones – and that money will be spread across an average of eight people.
Interestingly, men were found to be the biggest spenders when it comes to getting something for their special someone.
The average male respondent reported that they will spend $95 on their partner’s gift this year, while female respondents will be spending $83.
The survey also found that a sixth of the gifts we buy this holiday season will be bought last-minute in a tense rush to the store.
Respondents were asked their favorite gifts to receive – and if you find yourself in a last-minute situation – you can’t go wrong with a gift card, as 56 percent they enjoy getting one.
Four in 10 also said they like getting something practical that they can actually get use out of, while another 38 percent said they’d like to get something sentimental and personally meaningful.
“This holiday season give a gift that is both sentimental and practical," said a spokesperson for Slumber Cloud. "A gift such as a temperature regulating mattress pad for your loved one who hasn’t been able to get a good night’s rest in years due to night sweats, or a new pair of shoes for someone who deals with back pain due to being on their feet all day can be just the answer this year!”
