Forty-four percent of people rate 2019 as their best year for sex yet, according to new research.

The poll of 2,000 sexually-active Americans also discovered nearly half (47%) say their sex life was better in 2019 than in 2018.

It was a year for experimenting, as one in six Americans tried phone sex for the very first time and a further 29% tried using a sex toy for the first time.

Commissioned by Pure Romance and conducted by OnePoll, the "sexrospective" explored various aspects of respondents' 2019 sex lives.

Results found — from having anal sex for the very first time, using handcuffs and blindfolds or having a sexy photoshoot — 38% of those surveyed became more adventurous with sex in 2019.

One in five had sex in a car for the very first time while another one in six engaged in roleplay for the first time.

It’s no wonder then, that 79% are happy with their sex lives.

And over the past 12 months, Americans have learned a great deal about their bedroom habits. Forty-eight percent were able to communicate more with their partner about their likes and dislikes while a further 44% learned more about what makes their partner feel good.

Fifty-seven percent say their skills in the bedroom have improved over the past 12 months — with over half (52%) trying new positions in between the sheets.

A quarter of those surveyed have absolutely zero sexual regrets from the past 12 months.

However, just because 2019 was a great year for sex doesn’t mean Americans are going to stop experimenting in 2020, as 74% of those surveyed are hoping to be more sexually adventurous next year.

With over half (52%) saying they and their partners routinely try new things in the bedroom — 2020 looks like it might turn out to be another great year for sex.

“Experimenting and trying new things with your partner — all while being honest about each of your likes and dislikes — is really the key to an amazing sex life,” said Pure Romance Founder Patty Brisben. “Looking to put the spark back into your relationship? Be open about your desires and find something new you’re both excited to try.”

When it comes to great sex, doggy style was the preferred sexual position of choice for 58% of those studied — coming in as the number one sexual position of 2019.

Legs-up missionary (37%), missionary (32%), cowgirl (24%) and 69 (22%) rounded out the top five sexual positions of the past year.

But with all the great sex people had in 2019, 59% still wish they had more variety in their sex life.

“Getting adventurous means introducing whatever’s missing in your bedroom,” added Patty Brisben, Pure Romance Founder. “Never tried sex toys? Enhancement products like arousal gels or creams? Start there!”
