46 percent of Americans confess to having woken up upset at their partner - because they annoyed them IN A DREAM, a new survey has found.
Research revealed that common indiscretions made by significant others in dreams include them being unfaithful, having a huge fight or deviously keeping a big secret.
Nearly half of the 2,000 respondents polled had experienced a bad dream about their spouse or partner – with almost two thirds of those saying it affected their mood toward their significant other the following day.
The new research into the sleeping habits and effects of disrupted sleep on 2,000 Americans across the country by market researchers OnePoll, and conducted by Sleep Innovations also found that the average person will experience a bad dream of some sort approximately 24 nights a year.
The examination of our sleep quality also highlighted that many of us suffer other sleep disturbances. In fact, 43 percent of Americans polled admitted they typically struggle to get a good night's rest – with the average being nine bad night's every month.
The top cause for a bad night’s sleep was overwhelmingly stress or worry which affected over half of those polled (57 percent). While other health issues will also take their toll on people's sleep (31 percent).
Getting the right temperature proves a common barrier - 34 percent of the 2,000 studied are often too hot, while over a fifth (21 percent) regularly have the problem of being too cold.
And, even when health and temperature factors aren't a problem, sleep doesn't always come so easily - uncomfortable pillows or mattresses plague one in five of us regularly, according to results.
A spokesperson for Sleep Innovations said: “Dreams can be incredibly vivid and it’s understandable that sometimes they can influence our mood or outlook the next day.
“Whether it’s due to bad dreams, uncomfortable bedding or noisy neighbors, the role sleep plays in influencing our happiness, work performance and overall health can never be underestimated.
“With those polled claiming 108 nights of their year are impacted by struggling to get comfortable on a bad mattress or uncomfortable pillows, it’s clear that finding the perfect night time set-up will make a massive difference in the quality of life and peace of mind overall.”
The most common bad dream about a partner involves them having an affair or being unfaithful and it can be hard to shake – it takes two hours and forty-five minutes for the average person to shake strong feelings over a dream.
The fact that it was just a dream does little to lighten the mood during the day, especially when three in ten dreamed they had an intense argument with their spouse, and a quarter dreamed that their partner was hiding something.
It pays to talk to your partner though if they’ve played a starring role in last night’s dream.
Thirty-eight percent said they laughed along with their partner about the dream and easily dismissed it. A third felt their spouse was understanding, but 15 percent did report their partner didn't find the dream humorous at all.
And our mood is soured easily on low energy. Whether we're drained from disturbances such as stress or even bad dreams, the average American will experience 72 bad moods a year because of poor sleep.
The most common ramifications from a bad night’s sleep are irritability, physical and mental fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
And side effects from lack of sleep take a toll personally and professionally as Americans admit to making an average of 3.6 mistakes as a result of being too tired.
